“We asked non-profits, grantees, and government agencies in different sectors: How important was this labor contributed by those whom they sought to serve?...the answer came back: That participation, that involvement was indispensible to getting results. At that point we said: If that is so, why are you merely calling it participation? Why aren’t you calling it work? Why aren’t you regarding the producers of that work as co-workers and co-producers? And why are you not building that Co-Production into your core operating system?” (Cahn, 2000). My thought is that it makes the majority of society feel better calling it volunteerism, rather than indentured servitude, or voluntary slavery because those that don’t get paid are lazy, right? They just want to make someone else pay their way, right? It must be lack of ambition, right? Make no mistake; there is an army of us completing necessary tasks for free, while those laying the stigma on thick are saying it can’t be done. Guess what? The rent still needs to be paid, we need consumable energy to complete our task, and we pay for the transportation to get ourselves there… Do you still think social services are a waste? Well then pay me boss man.
