We can roughly gauge by the recent events on how proactive this gov is. Not even with ample time nor feedbacks can make this gov listen to its people. The gov has probably installed many self-appointed mindguards that protect the PM and his minsters from information that is problematic. 1) Jover Chews Case: The Gov is now looking into enhanced laws, stronger enforcement against errant retailers only after a public outcry and netizens vigilante. This also comes after several embassies warn consumers to beware of unsavoury retail practices in Singapore. Prior to this? Nothing. Complaints after complaints were reported but it just fell on deaf ears. 2) Roy Ngerngs - CPF: Numerous feedbacks and unhappiness. Protest and debates. Nothing happen. Not even a mention to review the policy. Meanwhile, minimum sum keeps on increasing. After the defamation case and widespread public awareness, PM Lee announced in his National Day speech that it will review the CPF policy. Why does it take an incident before he actually sits up and listen? 3) SMRT Bus Driver Strike: Two years in the making. They didnt bother until these bus drivers took matters into their own hands. Discriminatory remuneration packages. Appalling state of accommodation. These bus drivers tried every channel they had to address the issue but nothing was done. The HR is devoid of justice and human compassion. Only after the strike did SMRT made significant improvements in its treatment of bus drivers from China. 4) Little India Riot: Lack of manpower and resources were highlighted to those concerned. There were request to increase manpower but was told it was adequate. There were also concern about the significant increase in the number of foreign workers congregating in Little India and its a landmine waiting to explode. It went from the right ear, and travelled smoothly out of the left ear. They need a riot to break out before putting necessary measures to prevent future happenings. There are many more examples to mention. What we need is a gov that is proactive rather than reactive. After all, we are paying them a kings ransom nowhere seen in this world. Its justified to expect a competent and consultative gov that listens and care for us. Unfortunately, the current gov is simply unable to proactively engage with its own people to bring about greater benefits to the country. We cant wait for their next slip up as the next one might be the collapse of the economy. And that will be dire.
