We cannot seek remedy or cure for the torture we endure because of our egos. Instead we can only seek the death of self. We cannot allow ourselves to find secret lines of supply in our own courage, nor impenetrable retreats of self-defense in our own cleverness. Neither can we drink the subtle poison of hiding in generous acts of service to others, or even take comfort in the bitter bravery that resigns itself to no remedy, thereby giving satisfaction and comfort to our ego. Dying to self is painful...and kindnesses are only cruelty. Only the hand that tied us to this torture can deliver that freeing fatal blow. Lord we confess we worship the idol of self. Have mercy.
