We cannot start awarding songwriting credit based on this kind of similarity. This is an extremely dangerous precedent. Luckily it was not a court ruling. Perhaps there is something behind the scenes we dont know and thats why they caved. For instance, if they literally sampled and slowed down the rhythm track, then I could see it. But, no mention is made of that. I hope that music fans will do more research considering so many seem so adamant that these two songs are similar enough to award songwriting credit to Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. If you just look at music staples like the I–IV–V chord progression, 12-bar-blues and the Chuck Berry Riff, you could start awarding credit on thousands of songs to writers from decades ago based on mild similarity. Bottom line, musicians influence each other. Inspiration is not stealing. And a basic chord progression and rhythm should not constitute a copyright.
