We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies Memorial day, celebrated for nearly 150 years and with good reason- we remember our dead and their sacrifice. Sometimes we, as Americans lose sight about why it is so significant and others are just misinformed. Those few that have seen the pain of war tend to reflect a little more and try to correct those that get it wrong. I too have been guilty of this to the point of anger over the years but have become much more calm. On this day we remember those that have fallen in battle in the name of this country. The first time it made sense to me I was a young teen and my mother telling me of her first love Bobby going off to Vietnam. I could see it in her eyes 20 years later that it was a memory that will last forever just as vividly. My uncle Ken, so wildly fierce about never forgetting those lost in battle and my uncle Mike, always so calm and collective. Both brothers in blood and in battle during Vietnam. Though mellowed by age, they will never forget. My brother has lost friends as has my nephew Josh, myself and many of my friends. All of us haven chosen that path fully knowing that we could lose those we love....and even our own lives. But we still do it. We lose good men and women in battle, lives gone before they have even lived. Single, married, mothers, fathers, siblings- gone with the blink of an eye. We miss them because they leave a void. The Robb, Martin, Daza, Todd, Sully....my list can go on and on. Faceless to all but those that knew them and remembered on granite for everyone to respect. Enjoy your Memorial Day everyone just take that one minute to remember those that made it possible. It wasnt me, Im still here. We celebrate them on their special day. The Fallen. The Remembered.
