We determine the way we will be judged in heaven. In heaven, one is judged “measure for measure.” The way he judges others is commensurate to the way he will be judged from up High. If one forgives others easily - and gives the benefit of the doubt to those who hurt him – so too he will be judged favorably by Heaven. Raba said: Regarding anyone who forgives others, his sins will also be forgiven as it says: [Hashem] takes away our transgressions and overlooks our sins – whose sins are taken away? Those who overlook the sins of others” (Tractate Rosh Hashana 17A). Rashi explains: one who forgives – who is not particular and scrutinizes the actions of those who hurt him, but he overlooks their behavior and continues onward - is the person whose transgressions are forgiven. The attribute of strict justice does not scrutinize their actions, but leaves them alone and continues onward…” We are judged by Heaven in the same strictness that we judge those who hurt us. If we are not strict with them, we will not be judged strictly. Therefore, if we still fail and sin, but truly forgive others, we will in turn be forgiven by Heaven.
