We dont know why this child is precariously perched defecating on the banks of a gully; but we know that this is a common occurrence in this community, and it’s not farfetched to think this may be due to a lack of basic sanitary facilities. This is a community that is reputed to be one of the poorest in Jamaica. This is happening in the Prime Ministers constituency no less, a constituency she has continuously represented (for the most part, if one makes exception for the boycotted election in the 80’s) for well over 30 years. If this does not shock your conscience as a Jamaican, I submit that you should surrender your birth right. This right here is nothing less than the results of a politics of poverty which has been practiced in Jamaica for far too long, a politics characterized by ardent support for a political party and a Member of Parliament who is consistently re-elected notwithstanding her demonstrated incompetence and inability to the task at hand. To say this is shameful is an understatement, notwithstanding Jamaica being PNP country as we are so often reminded.
