“We don’t know why the victim does not want to lodge a police report. He refused to disclose this. No reports were received from other Vietnamese fans either.” M’sians started brawl but Vietnamese won’t report them. Police say that despite the unruly behaviour of Malaysian fans, no Vietnamese wish to press charges. Police investigations have revealed that it was the Malaysians who threw the first punch at Sunday’s AFF Suzuki Cup first-leg semi-final match in which Malaysia lost to Vietnam. However one unusual aspect of the entire episode is the refusal of the Vietnamese to lodge police reports against the perpetrators. In a report on the Malay Mail Online, Shah Alam police chief ACP Azisman Alias said this revelation came to light after police took statements from various witnesses and police officers on duty that night who described Malaysian fans as taunting the Vietnamese and throwing bottles at them before full-fledged fist fights eventually erupted. Despite arresting one local fan in his 20s, and later releasing him on bail from lack of sufficient evidence, Azisman said the Vietnamese fan who was attacked by several Malaysians has refused to lodge a police report. “We don’t know why the victim does not want to lodge a police report. He refused to disclose this. No reports were received from other Vietnamese fans either.” Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim, who weighed in on the matter said despite this unusual reluctance on the side of the Vietnamese to press charges, the police would keep up investigations until the perpetrators were brought to book. “We are taking this incident seriously and I urge those who were attacked to come forward and lodge police reports,” he said. Condemning any act of violence, Noor Rashid said it was important to refrain from getting swept away emotionally at football matches and to exercise self-restraint. He added, “They are our guests, how would you feel if this happened to our own in the second-leg match in Vietnam?”
