We feel that “The Colbert Report’s” current racial controversy did us a big favor here in Indian Country. The immediate, national and very visceral reaction to this parody/satire of Asians shows that some ethnic groups are off-limits, BUT American Indians continue to be insulted with inappropriate sports mascots (e.g. Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians, among others). The public reaction to the Colbert Report’s Asian comment – whether in or out of context – proves the point we have been making all along, namely that we ALL should be outraged by racial slurs against Native Americans as we all are by slurs against any other ethnic group.
