We found a terrapin in the yard. My Tennessee cousins, with my brothers and I were having fun with it. We found out that if we poked a stick at it, the thing would attack the stick. I dont think we intended to be cruel to it, we were just playing. Neither do I think the terrapin was enjoying itself. In fact, it seemed a little angry. Ronnie tipped it over on its back, and we laughed at its struggles. James got it upright again, but it didnt appreciate his kindness. Grandma Walker came out on the porch, wondering what we were doing. We told her we were playing with a turtle. She told us, That aint no turtle. Thats a tarpin, and if he gets a hold of your finger, he wont let go until the sun goes down, or it thunders. It was about 9:00 AM, on a clear day. If I remember correctly, I backed away from the creature quickly, and my brothers and cousins did the same, leaving it to slowly make its way back to the crawdads in the little creek where we had discovered it. Then we asked Grandma for biscuits and molasses, and I forgot about the terrapin until a friend posted a picture of a cool one here this morning. Ive never forgotten those biscuits, that creek, or my cousins, though.
