We got this message from a young community member after Rezas - TopicsExpress

We got this message from a young community member after Rezas appearance on CNN. We thought it was worth sharing. I am a regular Muslim 17 year old girl at college. Being a Muslim sadly feels like extra work next to being a Christian or a Hindu or a Buddhist. But people like you make it easier. People like you who educate the media of what we really are. Humans. I think it is extremely difficult what youre doing (that is obviously being a scholar), I admire how you are so patient with the stupid questions that are constantly being fired at you....No religion promotes violence or peace. Unfortunately, we cannot control people in a certain religion of their actions. I am a regular Muslim 17 year old girl at an American college who is originally from Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a Muslim Country and I am proud to say, I have never felt oppressed as a Muslim girl in my country. Have I felt oppressed as a Bangladeshi girl? Yes. Have I been undressed by the eyes of stranger men on the street as just a girl? Yes. But a religion is not defined by Bangladesh nor the 40 year old man who stares at my chest, on the bus. Our country is largely led by two women: Sheikh Hasina and until very recently, Khaleda Zia. We have voting rights, driving rights AND being-treated-like-a-normal-person rights at an airport in Bangladesh. But we dont hear about Bangladeshi Women in the media, simply because we arent Saudi Arabia or Pakistan. We arent oppressed. It hurts me to write that while I have plenty voting rights and driving rights in Non-Muslim places like Hong Kong or the USA, I have felt more oppressed here. I am treated specially at an airport, have gotten more raised eyebrows at the sight of my headscarf and simply been stereotyped far too often. I guess the point Im trying to make is that Muslim women arent oppressed in this world. Some Saudi Arabian women and Pakistani women are. Some Indian women and Burmese women also are. My utter regrets to those sisters out there, I hope your oppressors actions are condemned. But thank you for you have brought that realization upon many people. To make the distinction between religion and a state of mind that runs countries or certain parts of it. So thank you. Thank YOU, Reza Aslan. -On behalf of the larger portion of the Muslim women who arent oppressed in Muslim countries
