We had our first choking episode last night!! :-/ I thought I would share... LO is 32 weeks and we started BLW at 27 weeks. She was EBF up until that point. Shes been doing wonderfully and eats (I mean really eats, not just tastes or chews) everything I put in front of her. She loves food! Last night we were having crock pot chicken with red potatoes and carrots. Everything was really soft, much softer than some of the food shes had in the past. I placed one red potato cut in to 1/4s on her tray; she picked up the first piece and handled it well, then proceeded to shove the other three pieces in her mouth. I watched closely as she worked them around her mouth and tried to focus on the sound of her breathing through her nose (I still get nervous when she eats and this often calms my nerves). Then I noticed her eyebrows getting red and her eyes wide, her breathing had stopped. She pushed some potato out of her mouth and she was completely silent, no gagging, no choking noise, no breathing! She looked panicked. I stood up and time suddenly slowed down, I felt clear headed and like I knew what to do. I called my husband as I removed her tray lifted her up and tipped her head down laying her chest on my forearm. Before I even gave the first back blow the potato came flying out and she gasped. That breath sounded sooo good! She never even cried, just looked at me like thanks mom and wanted more potato! lol I credit my clear head and confidence to a family first aid and infant CPR class I took a few weeks ago. Anyway, sorry it’s so long of a post but long story short, look into a CPR class. It could give you the confidence to handle a bad situation well.
