We have a massive environmental catastrophe not far north of us in British Columbia. The breach of a tailings dam at a mine in the Cariboo has released millions of gallons of toxic waste . . . into the Cariboo River-Quesnel River-Quesnel Lake region toward which as many as 2 million sockeye salmon are headed up the Fraser River to spawn. The Fraser River, never dammed, is one of the worlds greatest salmon streams. U.S. fishers catch its bounty. So do Canadians. So do U.S. tribes. So do Aboriginal First Nations. Seattle PI is covering. I see almost nothing in other Seattle media. Where is Crosscut the voice of the great nearby? Writing ponderous pieces about Republicans keeping control of the State Senate. Alternative media is into marijuana busts and franchisees lawsuit against the minimum wage. The Seattle Times has crack, award-winning environmental reporters. As Joe Biden would put it, this is a big (bleepin) deal. This is the Exxon Valdez disaster of the Great White North. The premier is making inane feel-good remarks. Are we so provincial that we cant see whats happening in a province that borders on Washington?.
