We have all heard that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Here is a little history on that before I get to my point. This proverbial expression dates from the early 19th century, although versions of it that paraphrased the same thought existed well before then. The first of these alternate versions is found in a biography of Marcus Aurelius by Jeremy Collier and André Dacier, titled Emperor Marcus Antoninus his conversation with himself, 1708: You should consider that Imitation is the most acceptable part of Worship, and that the Gods had much rather Mankind should Resemble, than Flatter them. A nearer stab at the current version comes in a piece by the English writer Eustace Budgell in the newspaper The Spectator No. 605, October 1714: Imitation is a kind of artless Flattery. The full monty as far as this proverb is concerned was given by Charles Caleb Colton, inLacon: or, Many things in few words, 1820: Imitation is the sincerest of flattery. Colton was expressing the same idea as Budgell, in that, to imitate is to flatter without necessarily being aware one is flattering. As such, that artless appreciation has to be sincere. So now that we all are a little bit smarter. I was watching preparedmind101 aka Chris Tanner and what he did his pipe hawk. The more I thought it over I was like...hmmmm that does make sense to make it more well,,,, usable. So I copied his idea...Hence the flattery...but with a few changes of my own with things I had on hand. After reducing the handle length to 17 inches, I used one of my cane tips for my cold steel african walking stick for a end cap. I had to buy like 4 of them so there is a surplus. I also have used one on my M48 Hawk with nice results. For the handle I used two coats of duct tape and finished it off with some a layer of hockey stick grip non sticky cloth tape. At the ends I added a strip of electrical tape to keep the cloth tape from unraveling. I doubt it would but just in case. I had already had the rest of it modded out but used it for display and my trench hawk and M48 for work and play. But the hammer part Chris talked of was intriguing. I took out my decorative tacks. I really doubt with a few whacks they would stay in anyway. After all is done it feels pretty damn good. The length is just right and balanced. I like it. And Chris. Thanks....great idea. Below it are some pics on what it looked like before.
