We have been asked many questions from breeders asking us about metal nest boxes. they ask why we use them and what we use. We use the metal boxes due to they are able to be cleaned, you cannot clean wood, wood gets chewed up right at the time when birds getting ready to breed and they have to be replaced and then the breeding cycle can be upset, and wood is lighter to use and maintain easier in the long term,and wood is much hotter than metal, metal should not be used in direct sunlight however neither should wood boxes..We have developed a line of metal advanced design nest boxes we sell and approve and use at Royal Bird Company breeding facilties. We are having good reports on the latest design, called stubby boot. this box is a smaller version of the 24 inch long boot that we felt was too much room inside the box(for us), thus giving the breeding birds a insecure feeling and delaying breeding or in some cases if eggs are laid, eggs being scattered in the larger boot box nest chamber, the shorter boot stubby box gives the tight feeling for the birds as more natural and still allows for the positives from a boot style box, such as does not allow the birds to dive in on eggs, gives room for both female and males to be in the secure box, therefore increasing the secure feeling for greater success. Our research shows that many people mostly newbies and inexperienced breeders that think that the larger the box the better, its the opposite actually, where would a bird find such extra large cavities in natural habitats and trees, also why would they want that large box, that gives them a feeling that a larger predator may enter, think like a bird. we found out many years ago, that if the bird squeezes in the box they breed faster as they feel secure enough that other things bigger than they are not coming in and they can defend their smaller home and get down to business. also we have found ahigher hatch rate with smaller tighter boxes as the eggs can get incubated easier by the female, but we tell others use what you like, we have designed and used what works for 30 years, And remember not all metal nest boxes are made the same, many fabricators use cheap sheet metals imported from china, these are just not safe, but they are made cheaper and sold cheaper, but to what end, normally sick or dead breeder birds from exposing to these dangerous metals.our boxes are made by hand incorporating every safety feature we can do, we use them, so everything has to be right and they are made in USA, by americans and only use USA sheet metals galvalums, our customers are zoos, conservation groups, professional caring breeder facilities and pet owners that want a safe secure sleeping box,etc. However many breeders still use our regular sized boot boxes with success, this is our experiences only. for more info visit our website getbirdstuff
