We have been receiving many messages wondering how Brad is doing and I think a post on FB might be in order. For all of you who dont know Bradley well he has a wonderful friendly warm and loving way about him. He is very athletic, outgoing and has an amazing sense of humor and is very quick witted. He is liked by all and loved by many. My boy has a very large heart and in fact it is double the size it should be. He was diagnosed with something not all that common and similar to what is known as dilated cardiomyopathy shortly after he was rushed to Vancouver Childrens Hospital on Tuesday. This is a result of a secondary SA Node which has hijacked his electrical system of his heart and was sending extra pulses causing his heart to have an irregular arrhythmia. Lying down Bradleys heart rate would beat as fast as 260 beats per minute. This went on for a few days. Someone his age would normally have a heart rate of 60-80 beats per minute when resting, and might climb to 120-140 when running a marathon. This tired Bradley out over a few days and his heart came close to a full cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he called me at work and I actually listened and took him seriously or the outcome could have been much worse as he was home alone. Brad had a surgical procedure done which was a little exploratory to start as the doctors did not know for sure if they would be able to fix the problem or if this was something more drastic resulting in a plan B, a new heart. Once in, they were able to find the problem relatively quick and brad was back in the ICU a few hours later with a better heart rate. His heart rate is still at a running pace (100-115) but no where close to where it has been. We hope that with time and medication his heart will go back to a normal size and his heart rate will become more regular. We will know more in a few days. Rachelle and I thank everyone for their concerns, the hugs, tears and comfort in knowing Brad is loved and cared for by so many. His wonderful girl friend Kayla who has not left his side and has been through the ups and downs these past few days along with his Aunty, grandparents and numerous friends and team mates especially Brandon, Kevin, Harrison, and Blake his best friends. Brad is still recovering and has been very tough though this, not one tear from this kid. He pulled through like a true champ and our hope of course is a full and speedy recovery with time. A few pictures attached of Bradleys spring break include BC Provincial Basketball tournament, his 16th birthday and his experience at the ICU.
