We have some sad news to share with you all tonight. Sadly Charlie, our long term resident dog, has passed away. He had developed bad arthritis in both his back legs and was finding it hard to walk any large distances and also found getting up steps nearly impossible. He was on treatment for this condition and got weekly checkups from the vet. He had his good and bad days, but sadly the good days were getting less and less while the bad days were getting worse. Over the last week Charlie took a turn for the worse, his front legs were starting to go and he couldn’t really get up at all. Everyone that knew Charlie and who were used to seeing how full of life he was found this very difficult. The vet examined Charlie today and advised it was time to let him go. Charlie went to sleep in his own bed, with his best friend Girlie beside him this afternoon. We are truly heartbroken at the shelter and can’t explain how much Charlie will be missed by all the staff and volunteers who work with him every day. Charlie has been top dog at the shelter since 2001 when he was found abandoned in a house in Dungannon. To think that Charlie who was once so alone and abandoned became so happy and loved by many is very heartwarming at this time. If Charlie could speak for himself I know he would have thanked every single one of you that have supported the shelter in any way. To all those who raised money to keep the shelter going, and to all those volunteers who made the shelter Charlie’s home. In doing so you give Charlie the long and happy life he had and enjoyed. Rest in peace big man, it was a privilege to have known you and you will always be top dog at Grovehill. X
