We have ten, healthy Ornate Box Turtles that need homes before the end of the month so they can get ready for hibernation if you have a fenced yard and can accommodate one or more. The couple who have had them in their yard for a long time are relocating. We also have over 100 Red - eared Sliders (about the size of a half dollar/hatchlings) – they are healthy, we’ve had them over a month; they were confiscated by state officials. There is no longer a case pending, so if you have a garden pond that is not too deep and they can dig into some material on the bottom when the weather gets cold and come out to bask when it gets warm, that would be ideal. We’re otherwise going to winter them over (as the state wants) to give them the best chance of survival come spring. If they’re in a private pond, they may have a better chance with someone to look out for a few of them over the winter than simply released into water in other areas. We have also been asked to place three African Spurred Tortoises that have been peoples’ pets…..yes, we know they’re “exotics” and people love to dump their unwanted animals on us, but we also want what’s best for the animals at stake. If you’re interested in any of these, I’ll give you details -- please email me privately ASAP or call Gail Barnes at the Wildlife center at 806 799-2142. Many thanks for your help.
