We live in a world where scientists monkeying around with the stuff we eat at the genetic level, combining genes from jellyfish with potatoes for example, is perfectly acceptable. Taking perfectly natural foods with no genetic modification at all, though, and irradiating them to kill dangerous pathogens like e. coli and listeria - which does not genetically alter the food in any way, nor cause any residual radiation - that freaks us out something rotten and we refuse to do it. Save lives safely and keep foods from spoiling for weeks instead of days? No way. Create genetically altered frankenfood with no clear data on long-term health effects with the sole benefit of increasing corporate profits, then soak them in hormones and pesticides? Pass the salt. We are one screwed up bunch of people, baby.
