We loaded the tour bus Saturday with world-famous historian Ed Bears, now 90 years old, and headed out to re-trace General Steele’s disastrous campaign that took him to Camden, Arkansas and back in 1864. We took Interstate 30 out of Little Rock and, at the city limits, Mr. Bears started talking. He explained the purpose and plans for the expedition and its early difficulties, talking non-stop until we reached the second Arkadelphia exit (nearly 70 miles) where we took AR Highway 26 to trace the route to the battle at Elkin’s Ferry. There, Mr. Bears asked if there were questions. A voice from the rear floated forward, “Yes, can you tell us why General Steele got off the Interstate?”
