We moved to HdeG in the school year of 1945/46. Dad worked for the phone company. I remember walking up those steep steps to be in Mrs Wards room. I think she was recently married at that time. I dont remember much about first grade except Becky Forsythe Adams came up and said hello mrs lady is this your little girl! but know I loved Mrs Walker in second grade and had a terrible crush on Curtis Bruffy! We used to pass music books out together! I also Remember in second grade we had to memorize the story from St Luke and recite it by heart. Today I can still recite most of it. Third grade brought Mrs Bonney and the play Snow White and the seven drawfs. I had the lead and may have been the first ever blond Snow White with curls. I remember MaryBye Driggs and Tommy Lyon were Thumper and Stinker. At this time I was also going to Baltimore every Saturday morning to the Hippodrome theater to sing on stage and radio. I did that ever Sat until I was 10. No fun getting up that early. You could not go very fast on Route 40 which was all we had. I also was one of those who had lice knits and thought my mom would die of humiliation! I was spotless spoiled only child! Mrs Green checked us under the light of the window. Not sure why she was in our room doing it but she scared me! Fourth grade brought Mrs Hollihan whose room had a door connected to the office and when the office staff were out, we were assigned to go answer the phone when it rang. Talk about feeling grown up. Havre de Grace elementary school! Fifth grade brought Mrs Haas. I have often thought of her since Jackie Haas was at the board but dont think it one and same. Sixth grade brought my beloved Ann Cook. So young, maybe her first year but we sure loved her. Levin Heath was right across the hall and I was assigned to his room but some how got it changed. He NEVER LETS ME FORGET IT EITHER TO THIS DAY. Haha. THIS WAS ALSO THE FIRST YEAR IN THE NEW SCHOOL THE CURRENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I REMEMBER WHEN WE GOT OVER TO THE HIGH SCHOOL WE HAD TO WALK TO THE NEW ELEMENTARY FOR LUNCH BECAUSE THE HIGH SCHOOL HAD NO CAFETERIA! It was a long walk and being mouthy like I am I always tried to catch a ride with someone who had wheels. I could go on but grades 7-12 brought so many teachers... Bennington, Baldwin, Davis, Colbourn, Mr Fisher, Donnelly, and that handsome English teacher in Grade 10 Mr Depuey. We used to leave notes in his desk about the song Teach Me Tonight! There are so many memories I could go on and on... Cheerleading, Bud Coakley and tears when he went to Edgewood. But this has been long enough. At 75 I guess you start to look back. So many of my friends and loved ones are gone and it is nice to remember. Oh yes I cant leave out holding hands with Gordy Donovan in the movies in 7th grade and playing spin the bottle at his house parties. Pat Donovan and I still joke about those days. Who cared that I was 6 inches taller than he was. Those were the days to remember!
