We must not be innocents abroad in a world that is not innocent. George Washington Naivete can get you killed. Many people live their lives in a Pollyanna style haze. They live in their own little world where they never have to encounter the realities of the ugly side of life. They never come into contact with evil, and therefore they have their doubts whether it even exists. When they see signs of it on the news, they justify it by blaming it on poverty or abuse or whatever, from the comfort of their own little fortress, feeling secure that, “That kind of thing could never happen to my family.” And most of them live their lives without coming in direct contact with the other world, this dark underworld where morals and standards are as different from their own as night is from day. The problem is that these people carry their naïve view of the world with them when they leave the security of their world and venture out into new territories. This is very dangerous. They enter a world that they neither understand nor are prepared to encounter, and they do so blindly. As George Washington pointed out many years ago, you must not be an innocent sheep in a world of wolves. He also stated that you must be ready for conflict at all times. The real world, as sad as it may be, is not a world of innocent people, all caring about the welfare of others. There are bad people out there, some of them REALLY BAD, and they will not take pity on you because of your innocence, in fact they see your innocence as an invitation to attack. If you are going to play in the jungle, you should understand the predator. Bohdi Sanders ~ excerpt from The Warrior Lifestyle, page 56
