We must then take a good look and find out what the various communication media are doing to us. Are we having every evening wrecked by bad news? Are we becoming more and more emotionally negative? Have we reached the point where good news is turned off automatically because we cannot imagine that it is true? Are we more and more addicted to the acceptance of a negative report without questioning it, without examining it, without estimating its relationship to the larger patterns of society which, perhaps, we do not understand? If we permit ourselves to take in a mass of indigestible material we are in the same problem as if we had taken in a large quantity of indigestible food: we become sick, dyspeptic, and destroy the natural processes of the body. A large part of our difficulty in health is the fact that we are sustained by a poor nutrition; and the kind of anxieties that we have today constitute poor mental and emotional nutrition. We have come to feel that if everything is good news, purpose is developing beautifully, but if things become involved in what we call bad news, then the bottom falls out of the universe. We have to outgrow this immaturity or live in chaos all our lives. We must finally decide that the good and the bad are part of purpose, and the things that seem tragic or terrible to us must be understood in terms of a universe of absolute integrity. If we can build this inner realization, we will not have to drift down through the years in a mass of doubts and uncertainties. ~Manly Palmer Hall, Excerpted from Lecture Note #136: Planning for an Uncluttered Future from a lecture given: November 2, 1969 © 1994 by the Philosophical Research Society
