We need to put people to work clearing the tremendous volume of flammable but unmarketable material from woodlands that has built up during decades of fire suppression. This will take some money but it is cheaper, in my opinion, than dealing with the fires, as well as a heck of lot more environmentally friendly. Fires now, with this much fuel are a new thing, and the more intense heat is destroying utterly many species that used to survive and even thrive during thousands of years of smaller, periodic fires that burned up this material before it became so dangerous. Better to employ folks to clear out the brush than to fight the fires, and deal with the environmental disasters left behind them and their economic consequences. Much of this is work that unskilled and young people can do, and many of them are looking for, but can not find employment. It is real work and hard work at that, and should be paid decent wages and the people well taken care of, as well as honored for doing it. This is a big problem and it is not going away unless it is catastrophically. It is worth our investment of research and infrastructure to adequately deal with it.
