We present another participants of our catalogue DIVINE TEMPLE versta-k.ru/en/catalog/67/657/: The workshop of «Αγιογραφία» (a Greek word for icon paining) belongs to the Orthodox Fraternity named «Christian Hope», which is located in Filyro of Thessaloniki. The main tasks of the Fraternity are missionary, charitable and social ones. Icon painting answers all these challenges. Since 1990 we have started complex apprenticeships, in order to learn freehand drawing, model, colour and composition, in workshops of the School of Fine Arts and in monasteries, under the guidance of experienced icon painters, such as, Mr. S. Sergiadis, Mr. J. Vranos, Mr. L. Christidis. Moreover, the study of traditional Byzantine style has been our first priority. Having completed four years studies at the School of Hagiography of the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus, we received our degrees, having being taught by hagiographers such as Mr. I. Caruso, Mr. Ch . Liondas, Mr. J Markopoulos, the teacher of Byzantinology Mr. N. Zia, of Architecture – Rythmology, Mr. I. Karatzoglou, and teacher of History & Art, Mr. M. Tsomidis . The following three-year training under the supervision of Mr. C. Kordis was aimed at enriching our knowledge on the Byzantine art, in both theory and practice. The workshop also took part in a seminar on frescoes, held by the Theological School of Athens University and the department of Conservation of works of Art. We have been devoted to our task of Αγιογραφία, the icon painting, for years now, with a sense of responsibility and faithfulness to the tradition of Byzantine art. Our goal is the conservation of the tradition of Byzantine art and transmission it to the generations to follow. Portable icons are made on wood (either natural or Russian plywood), with egg-tempera and mineral paints. To ensure the natural drying of egg-tempera, icons are secured in handcrafted display cases made of beech wood. After such a case frames an icon with glazed gilding, the glass of the icon is «baked» in a special way, to achieve reduction in its reflectivity. Upon delivery of each piece of work, our workshop provides the client with a detailed reference to the stages of the infrastructure of the icon, in electronic format, to ensure its diachronic maintenance. Our techniques are inspired by nature and old Byzantine icons. Therefore, we use in our paintings warm and cool colors in earthy tones; when painting faces and hands, we adopt particular styles, applying cross-type fine brush strokes. We try to achieve an expression of hesychasm by corresponding style and ethos. [email protected] agiografeio.gr
