We received this photo the other day, of Governor Rick Perry of Texas, with his pair of Pete Bennett custom spurs, which were presented to him at the Governors Ball, which must have been especially significant due to the Governor retiring at the end of 2014. These spurs were ordered by a friend of Governor Perrys, almost 2 years ago. The order was placed with a hand-engraver of the highest order, Montana Turtle Klaus, of West Yellowstone, MT, and he asked Pete to undertake the first step, that of building a pair of blank, working-cowboy spurs. Pete made a set of spurs that would please a Texas cowboy (probably half of the Bennett Spurs built went to the great state of TX) and, at Turtles request, Pete soldered the steel disc upon the outside heel-band of each spur. When Turtle went to work on them with his unique style of engraving, and we saw the results, we were astounded! They are indeed, completely unique. Turtle then wanted to complete the spurs with a handmade set of cowboy spur-straps, so he put Hoss Hopkins of Bozeman, MT, to the task of applying his craft of leatherworking to the project. It seems impossible to think that 3 different artisans, living far apart from each, could work so well together to complete the spurs! The fact that it worked is, in my mind, definitely attributed to Turtles ability to trust, to make decisions and communicate clearly. If your interest is piqued, click on each of the spur pics to see the detail of these fine spurs (which were also custom-made to fit Gov. Perrys boots). If anyone reading this wants to contact either Turtle or Hoss Hopkins, sent me a message and Ill put you in touch with them.
