We still have a way to go in this country with penalty rates: This week, the Fair Work Commission ruled against our application to overhaul the current weekend penalty rates system, and exclude small businesses from the wage rates contained in the Award. Our CEO Stephen Cartwright said: The only result this decision will shape is a reduction in employment opportunities in cafes and restaurants across the country, It is simply becoming too expensive to employ people on weekends if they are not the owner or family members. The old penalty rates system that has been sent into overdrive as a result of the award modernisation process under the former Labor Government does not reflect the modern 24/7 21st century economy, says Cartwright. Award imposed penalty rates are meaningless if the shift is never worked - everybody loses because the worker loses wages, the employer loses sales, the governments lose tax and the consumer loses a valued service. All in all, a crazy outcome for a country with rising unemployment and a rapidly growing - and unaffordable - welfare bill! We will continue to pursue the reduction of weekend penalty rates in 2014 on behalf of members. Read more: goo.gl/fJQWRp
