We study history a lot at home. It is just mind boggling on how the appeasement mentality of the French and Neville Chamberlain of Britain and even to a degree the United States in 1939 cost untold millions of lives by thinking Hitler would straighten up and fly right. Sometimes leaders of countries are just tools. Sometimes a heavy hand is the only thing that would keep them in check. Interviews with Germans after the fact, stated that they would have followed anyone that promised and delivered what Hitler did early on, no matter what the price, to keep their country from becoming further impoverished. Elimination of race and even classes of people. Plenty of Polish people were slaughtered just because they were a part of the middle class. The Germans kept the subordinate uneducated classes of people to work as slaves in the German war machine, they worked them and other prisoners until death and buried them in mass graves. As the old timers die off that witnessed all that horror first hand, its scary to think what people will tolerate, when they dont think that people in large masses are capable of true evil. Sometimes smaller scale violence is required to keep mass slaughter from occurring. Very sad, and not all that long ago.
