We talk about watersheds a lot, but what exactly IS a watershed? A watershed drains excess water (like snow and rain) into rivers and lakes. They encompass all surface water (including lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs, and wetlands) and all the groundwater beneath. They depend heavily on topography, because water can only flow downhill - hills and ridges that separate two watersheds are called drainage divides. Watersheds are extremely important to water quality and the economy; according to the EPA, an estimated $450 billion in food, fiber, manufactured goods, and tourism depends on the health and quality of watersheds. There are 28 watersheds in Massachusetts, and 4 in the metro-Boston area. Check out the DEPs Watershed site to learn more and to find out what watershed your home is in! ow.ly/zVjY3
