We thought we would share a letter we received from a parent we worked with here in Georgia...We can work with your group as well! Good Afternoon Mr. Williamson, My son played in the 6/7 year old league at XXX Park and we just wrap up our season last night with an extra inning loss to the (Cubs. Great game right to end! I wanted to take a moment to express some feelings about the coaching. I understand they volunteer. I appreciate and respect the time they give up to coach. My son is 7 and this was his first season playing baseball. Although there were instances of positive reinforcement when mistakes were made, there were equally as many times the kids were screamed at and made to feel inferior to some of the more advanced players in comparison. We dont get to take those words back and they can be discouraging and detrimental to a young mind. Last night, following the game, an e-mail was sent to the coach from one of the player’s father. His son told them that the coach said the team would have won the game if not for a defensive mistake he made. He loves baseball and his team and he took that really hard. He left the park crying, cried when he got home and woke up still upset. Rightfully so. In response to a group e-mail regarding the matter, I shared our experience with the other parents. We found out early in the season, that our son Connor loves baseball, but his knowledge and ability had not yet matched his love for the game. So, we took it upon ourselves to do some outside work with him and were lucky to come across a neighbor who helped coach him. Outside of the additional hitting lessons, and general baseball lessons, one thing we noticed is that Connor became more engaged, more willing to work, and ultimately, more successful. This neighbor actually owns a company called SportsRevolution. It’s a company that focuses on character based education for players, parents and coaches and has even created online learning opportunities to make all of us better parents and coaches. It would be nice to implement something like this that would require everyone to complete the certifications, if for no other reason, than to make the experience better for our kids. Bottom line, words matter, and Tony, thru his company, make that a priority. He is a local resource our entire league should be taking advantage of to make sports more fun and engaging for our players. I have taken it upon myself to share his information should you or the league want to utilize his SportsRevolution services. Tony Schuster sportsrevolution 309.287.8021 Thank you for your time. We look forward to the spring season. Concerned Parent.
