We took the bus to Sintra yesterday, about 40 minutes ride through - TopicsExpress

We took the bus to Sintra yesterday, about 40 minutes ride through the most tedious suburbs to arrive at a near Disney hill town of castles, palaces, chateaux and villas (plus the inevitable tourist shops and cafes) - all in a wonderful woodland setting. The town was discovered by the Portuguese Royal Family in the 1880s and they built themselves a number of the most amazing palaces incorporating and renovating a real ruined Moorish castle on a nearby hill as part of the view. All now in public ownership after the Republic was declared in 1910. The town was a delight after Lisbon and full of eccentricity, colour and fun. Walking along the battlements in the Castle was quite scary at times but no bossy Health & Safety notices. The pictures show the Moorish Castle, the Town Hall and Triton who was carved over the archway in the Pena Palace.
