We watched Dallas Buyers Club last night. The great: Matthew - TopicsExpress

We watched Dallas Buyers Club last night. The great: Matthew McConaughey, brilliant as ever and retaining no trace of his iconic characterizations. He may have become too sympathetic after the opening 45 minutes or so, but he sells every nuance of his complicated character. Also, the way the film refuses to hold our hands and explain every detail of whats going on - politics occur in the background, and real lives are affected in the foreground. The good: Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner, two characters with divided loyalties who are ultimately deeply sympathetic. Its also well paced, funnier than I expected, and engrossing. The bad: Well, obviously the way the FDA played with peoples lives, but that was real life. As for the film, its another example of putting a spin on a crisis of one class by making it be all about a hero of another. For a movie about AIDS in the 80s, the focus is all about the then very rare American straight white male who caught it, and it shuttles all the gay characters save one to virtually interchangeable background roles.
