We watched the movie “Up” last night, and I discovered a new favorite part. It’s the part I imagine inside my head. I’m not even going to say spoiler alert. This movie has one of the greatest dog characters of all time. If you haven’t watched it, go away and do not return until you have seen it. This post is about Dug. My favorite line in the movie is spoken by Dug the golden retriever: “I was hiding under your porch because I love you.” If you haven’t seen it then this sounds stalkerish, but in the context of the film it’s wonderful. Dug just wants to love and be loved. And later, via a strategic use of the “cone of shame,” Dug becomes Alpha Dug. I’ve lambasted the whole alpha male bullshit in myriad pieces, but in this context it works. Dug becomes leader of the blimp riding dog pack that was once the tool of evil. Dug has replaced the old bad master with a kind and good master. This is the part that comes from my head; what we don’t see in the movie. As alpha and first officer of the new old man in charge, Dug teaches the rest of the pack a better way. Doug teaches them how to love and be loved. And that’s awesome. Because there are no bad dogs.
