We welcomed today’s Social Housing Strategy which commits to providing over 35,000 social housing units by 2020. However, we warned that the challenge now is in delivering the homes required to tackle the growing housing and homeless crisis. It will take at least 18 months until the new plan begins to deliver the first homes for people in need. There also urgently needs to be a clear and effective short-term strategy to tackle the current crisis in family homeless and in affordable housing for single people. The social housing strategy is welcome and will create jobs but the fact remains that it does nothing today for the over 800 children, their families and many single people who have become homeless so far this year. Gillian is a mother who is currently homeless with her children in Dublin. We worked with her to set up this Newstalk video where she tells her story in a very powerful way. Gillian also decided herself to send her video to Enda Kenny today asking for action and also challenging an Taoiseach to find someone to live in Dublin under the current rent supplement limits. Gillian and her children are supported by our family team. We will continue our campaign work to call for rent supplement to be raised to match market rents so that Gillian and many more people who are homeless do not continue to be trapped in homeless for months and even years at a time.
