Malaysian car manufacturer keen to invest in Bangladesh Dhaka : 18 Sept. 2014 Malaysian renowned automobile company Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd, widely known as PROTON, has expressed its keen interest in setting up a joint venture car manufacturing plant in Bangladesh. According to commerce ministry officials, a two-member delegation from Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional yesterday held meetings with the top officials of the commerce ministry including senior commerce secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, ndc, to elaborately discuss about the matter. A two-member team of Malaysian automobile company is senior executive of Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd Norman Be Karidi and its executive Fatin Otsman. Managing dirctor of PHP automobile industry Mohamamd Akter Parvez Chowdhury and an adviser engineer Mohamamd Ali Chowdhury. Local business conglomerate PHP group will be the local partner of the joint venture of the automobile plant in Bangladesh, said a source in commerce ministry. According to the meeting sources, the Malaysian team reminded that the economy of the two Asian countries Bangladesh and Indonesia, were not affected by the global economic recession during 2007 to 2009 as these two countries have strong economy to survive the last global recession. According to the IMF, the world growth was slowed from 5% in 2007 to 3.75% in 2008 and to just over 2% in 2009. Our company chairman and ex-Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad instructed us to conduct a rigorous economic survey in Bangladesh before setting up a car manufacturing plant, they also said. “We are visiting Bangladesh to meet the potential stakeholders in car manufacturing industry for assessing the car demand as per the survey, they added. In fact, the Malaysian counterpart wanted to know about the prospect of the export facilities of a car manufacturers in the Bangladeshi export markets as they are keen to establish a joint venture in Bangladesh, Shawkat Ali Waresi, an additional secretary, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday after the meeting. “As Bangladeshi export items are going to the European union countries under the least development category, the potential car exporters will also get the same export facilities”. Regarding local demand of car, he noted that yearly earnings of a big portion of the population is around US$20,000, so the prospect of domestically made car is bright in the local market as well. Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd or PROTON was incorporated on May 7, 1983 to manufacture, assemble and sell motor vehicles and related products, including accessories, spare parts and other components. PROTON produced Malaysias first car, the Proton SAGA, commercially launched on July 9, 1985 by Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who had originally conceived the idea of a Malaysian car. Proton car manufacturer main plant in Shah Alam, with an area of 923,900 sq metres, was originally designed for a capacity of 80,000 units per year.
