Then they changed their minds. They decided they had to take over Berlin exclusively. On 6/24/48, they cut Berlin off via road or railroad illegally. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Blockade) We then did the Berlin airlift until 5/12/49 when the Soviets gave up. . Again, the Soviets tried to intimidate us out of Berlin starting on 6/4/61. Soviet Union issued an ultimatum telling us to get out of Berlin. They brought up tanks right to the border just feet away from our troops and pointed their main guns at our troops. We brought up our tanks and pointed their main guns at the tip of the Soviet gun barrels. The building of the Berlin Wall on 8/13/61 was part of that crisis. No. Was it defensible by the American Berlin Brigade (maybe 2,000 guys) and their French and British Counterparts when surrounded by the East German and Soviet Armies? No. . But Presidents Truman and Kennedy provided the leadership and NATO stuck together and stared down the Soviets who ultimately were the ones who blinked. Ditto in Cuba in October 1962. No. but the point is people like the Russians will take over the world if WE blink. This also happened in Munich Germany in 1938. And with the possible exception of David Cameron in the UK, the current European leaders are all Neville Chamberlains.
