We were the first set of students in the secondary school. The - TopicsExpress

We were the first set of students in the secondary school. The senior prefect was our classmate, albeit older, bigger. He was in the habit of telling some of his mates to kneel down for contravening one rule or the other. We had a meeting. Next time the prefect tell us to kneel down, we would not. Next time came and he told us to kneel down. Of course i did not kneel down. Fayemi, are you deaf? I said kneel down! Why was he mentioning only my name? I found out soon enough. Everyone was kneeling down, except me. I was dismayed. What? Before i could collect my thought, I received a slap and fighting ensued. He was bigger, stronger, so I grabbed a big stick to equalize the fight. The equal strength brought the fighting to a halt. And it was postponed to another day. This childhood experience is akin to our current confrontation with the status quo. Whenever status quo says everybody kneel down!, what are you going to do? Stand up? Or kneel down? As for me, I stood up then, I am standing up now, and I will die on my feet.
