We were very lucky to have Gary Yee as our interim superintendent and I hope he’ll remain involved in Oakland education. As a champion for the Linked Learning initiative in Oakland schools, Gary has been a leader in helping our young people learn not just a college-preparatory curriculum, but also workplace skills and technical skills they will need to be productive in the job market they will join in the years to come. He’s dramatically reduced suspensions and increased our schools’ commitment to the students who need the most help and service. And he was a leader in advocating and implementing the local-control funding formula for schools that is now in place, allowing communities and families to get more involved in decisions about how schools can best support our high-needs students. Ive worked closely with Gary through my Education Cabinet and I thank him for his partnership and his commitment. I look forward to working closely with our next superintendent to support our schools and continue building the jobs-to-careers pipelines already underway.
