We would appreciate it if ALL of you would take the time to carefully read this. Thank you in advance for your understanding. We would like to thank everyone for your support and well meaning comments on our page. As we have said many times, without your support, we could not do the things that we do. However, from some of the comments posted about our Great Dane, it seems that there may be some confusion as to what our protocol is for taking owner surrendered dogs, fostering dogs, and adopting dogs. First, we are very careful with our owner surrenders. We talk extensively with the owner and explain our adoption process and our surrender process. The owner is very clear on what is occurring when they surrender a dog to us. It is sad that Big Macs owner was deployed and they gave him to a neighbor that kept him crated for 6 months. Luckily, that neighbor felt it in his best interest that we find him a new home. In fact, we were trusted to do just that. We would NEVER take a dog into our rescue without the owners full consent and understanding. Since Mac was given to the neighbor, the neighbor was the legal owner and she willingly surrendered him. Second, we are an ALL breed rescue. All of us that foster and run this rescue have a great deal of experience. Brittany has worked in the animal industry in some capacity since 1996. She has worked for nine years in private rescue and has sat on the board for three rescues. I have worked in rescue for over seven years and been a vet tech on a parttime basis for the last 18 years. I have sat on the board of two nonprofit rescue groups. We have owned animals all of our lives. We bring expertise with different breeds to the table. We also work closely with Sylvie Pleasant from K9 Solutions. Many of our foster families have taken classes with Sylvie. We also consult with her concerning dogs in our care with behavioral issues that are beyond our realm of expertise. We assess our dogs carefully before placing them in a foster home or an adoptive home. Make no mistake that we want to save as many dogs as we can but we are more concerned with placing our dogs in both foster and adoptive situations that will best meet their needs and where they will reach their full potential. We would be doing a grave disservice to both the dog and its adoptive home if we did not carefully consider all factors. Often dogs end up in shelters or being surrendered by owners because the dog was not a good match for the owner for a variety of reasons. We want to make sure that it doesnt happen again for the dog. Providing a safe foster home or adoptive home where the dog is cared for is important, but it is NOT enough as someone seemed to think in their comments. It would be totally irresponsible of us to not look at the needs of EACH INDIVIDUAL dog in our care and decide on the very best placement for it. And we DO KNOW what is best for each of our dogs. This helps keep returns to a minimum. ABARC has an excellent reputation in the rescue world. We have a large number of shelters and rescues in several states that we work with extensively. We are often called before anyone else because we have the reputation of not only going that extra mile for our dogs, but also carefully placing them in a home where they will thrive. It was more than a little disheartening that our judgment and integrity was publicly questioned regarding where to place the Dane; especially since no one but a handful of us knows all the facts and has met the dog. I wish that everyone was as eager to help all of the other dogs as you have been willing to help this one. Whereas, we certainly welcome suggestions and yes, even criticisms, please be respectful of the job, completely volunteer, that we are trying to do. Most of all, please know your facts before you start telling us how we need to run the rescue. We welcome volunteers, fosters, and anyone willing to help. Please be part of our solution to help dogs in need, not part of the problem. ~Lois
