Weary In Doing Good One Friday night, my wife and I met our daughter Kelly in the city for dinner; as we were leaving the restaurant, I noticed a homeless lady about my age. She didnt have that far away look that many have .. and it was apparent that she did the best she could about her appearance. This feeling came over me to speak with her .. without hesitation, or words with my family .. I approached her. My first question was have you eaten today? needless to say, she hadnt. I fed her and gave her enough money to eat again the next day .. During our time together, she asked why I did this? My answer astounded me .. because God told me to I must admit that there was zero exertion in those moments spent with this woman .. this person .. this child of God. I wasnt weary, and never expected to reap a reward for following the will of God. However, God did give me an immediate reward ... My wife shared with me later on the drive home the conversation she had with our daughter. Kelly said, Dad would never have done this 5-10 years ago .. he has truly changed Kelly was right .. ten years ago, I would have said that this woman deserved her circumstances. That if she wanted to change, she could .. that she obviously wanted to be homeless, or she wouldnt be. Thank you Father for softening my heart. Thank you Father for opening my eyes to the needs of others. Thank you Father for helping me to share the love of Jesus, much like You have shared with me. Father, please continue to use me in ways You see fit ... Amen Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9) Any exertion, by definition, is not easy. When we exercise, we breathe heavily, perspire and get physically tired. When we work at a job, we may not perspire, but we definitely get physically and mentally tired. Why undergo the struggle? There are rewards, of course. After exercising, our bodies feel better; after working, we are paid for our efforts. These are obviously worthwhile activities we can do that benefit ourselves. Sometimes the benefits of helping others can be less obvious. Jesus tells us that we are to help those who will not repay us and to love those who do not love us. These things are not easy to do. The exertion is great, and the returns are not immediately apparent. Even so, we are to overcome our fatigue and keep putting others needs ahead of our own. If we do, we will earn rewards in Heaven that far exceeds anything attainable on Earth. There can be no greater satisfaction than that which comes from helping even one other soul to find Gods salvation. O Lord, keep me ever mindful in my daily life that I should work for You. Show me how to love others and to repay evil intentions with good deeds. Give me the stamina to do Your will. Amen.
