Weaver is moving right along in his training to be a hearing dog. The training scenario weve set up here is based on the real world dinner time set up at Roger and Chars house. Char will be cooking while Roger reads in his chair in the living room, and Weaver sets up camp on the kitchen floor, soaking in the aroma of whatevers on the menu. When dinner is ready, Char will say, Its time to eat, go get Roger! And then Weaver will go to Roger, nudge him to alert, and bring him back to the source of the sound -- in this case, Chars voice calling for Roger. While Weaver doesnt move quite as speedily as some hearing alert dogs, he is absolutely understanding his job more and more as our lessons go on. In this video, something youll see that might seem subtle but is a really big deal, is that Weaver goes back to get Roger a second time (when Roger purposely lags behind), and then looks back a second time when theyre to the kitchen. This shows that he understands Roger needs to be following him to the sound, not just that he alerts and then his job is done. We accomplish teaching him this in the exercise by having Roger reward him with a high value treat once in the kitchen,as opposed to Char doing it. So proud of these three!
