Al Sharptons words on this weekends Eric Garner demonstration N National Action Network to me 10 hours agoDetails Why we march, what we want: Rev. Al Sharpton, in his own words, on this weekends Eric Garner demonstration The definition of a police state is when citizens cant question power BY REV. AL SHARPTON NEW YORK DAILY NEWS It’s hard to believe that this Saturday marks 25 years to the date when Yusuf Hawkins, a 16-year-old black kid, was shot to death after being chased by a bat-wielding mob of whites in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. As we marched through the streets of that neighborhood to demand justice, we had watermelon pieces and eggs thrown at us; we were called the N-word and other derogatory names. I’ll never forget the moment that I was stabbed while leading this peaceful demonstration. It was an ugly time, and not this city’s proudest moment. Today, we vow to never return to an era of Us vs. Them, where appalling racial divides keep us apart. We are united and stand together as one human family against injustice. We will not go back. On Saturday, National Action Network and I will be joined by community leaders, parents, children, educators, police officers, religious leaders, municipal workers and others from various backgrounds as we march and rally together in Staten Island to demand justice for Eric Garner. Last month, Garner died after an NYPD officer placed him in an apparent illegal chokehold according to videotape capturing the incident. As the footage shows, the father of six yelled “I can’t breathe” over and over again. Garner was unarmed. A medical examiner later ruled his death a homicide. The officer or officers involved in the death have yet to be held accountable. Presenting evidence to a grand jury isn’t enough; we need transparency, we need answers and we need fairness. This is why we march. Justice caravans will depart from Brooklyn and New Jersey at 9 a.m. sharp Saturday morning and travel to Staten Island to the location where Garner died. At high noon, we will march directly to the Staten Island district attorney’s office. Unlike 25 years ago, when we were treated like outsiders in our own city, we do not expect that kind of a reception now. Blacks, whites, Latinos, Asians — people from all religious and cultural backgrounds — recognize that we still have inequality and injustice that we must tackle together. Some have tried to label our demonstration as “anti-police.” Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, police officers will even be speaking at our rally on Saturday. Our problem isn’t with the majority of cops who do their tough jobs day in and day out keeping people safe. It is instead with the bad apples, the ones who push communities and police further apart and create a climate of animosity and distrust. If we do not highlight cases like Garner’s and demand accountability, then what sort of a message are we sending to both residents and those hired to protect them? The message of Saturday’s rally is similar to the message I delivered earlier this week in Ferguson, Mo., where an unarmed black teenager’s death has brought frayed police-community relations to the forefront. Is it unreasonable to ask that unarmed people not be killed? There are those that would like to tell us we are somehow not allowed to question the police or authorities no matter what they do. The definition of a police state is when citizens cannot question power. We as a nation tell the world to hold their leaders and authority figures accountable for their actions, but we are not supposed to do the same here? As I said in Ferguson, this is a defining moment in America. Every morning when I rise, I look at the mark on my chest where I was stabbed a quarter of a century ago. It is a reminder of how things used to be. We have undoubtedly come a long way since I looked at the blade of that knife, but we must continue to progress forward.
