Wednesday, March 19th Lead Us Not Into Disqualification Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 As the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics come to a close, I am mindful of an athlete’s journey. Regardless of the sport or individual circumstances, the athletes had to overcome diversified obstacles to reach the Olympic stage. Each athlete’s story, as profiled to the world, painted a portrait of self-discipline and perseverance. For some of these disciples of athleticism, their journey closed with glory- the Gold medal. However, for a couple of the athletes, the journey ended with disqualification and shame. Somewhere along the Olympic path, their devotion gave way to temptation and they fell. In I Corinthians 10: 1-13, we are reminded of the fate of so many who did not complete their journey in Israel. Although ALL of the people had privileges that came from heaven, “…with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.” Their spiritual health was plagued with ingratitude, and it ultimately led to rebellion and death. As Christians, we also embark on an “Olympic“ journey. The teachings of I Corinthians remind us that our gifts are all for God. We must be self-disciplined in the use of all that God provides for us, and we must have perseverance in faithful discipleship. And, like the athletes of Sochi or the people of Israel, we are not exempt from failure, disqualification, and the loss of rewards. Prayer: Dear Lord, as we are reminded that we are not exempt from failure or disqualification, we are also reminded that you are faithful and will provide a means of escape. Please give us the strength and discipline to use our salvation responsibly- to live and use our privileges to glorify you. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen. Kim Watts
