Week 4 Updates: Hey friends! Heres a glimpse into what we accomplished this week: 1) The IR imaging team of Jadee Kellogg and Michael Andrew Stefik made some great progress: the CHDK program was successfully uploaded to the camera, and the prototype camera mount was created using the 3D printer. Also, the IR blocking filter was taken out of the camera, so now pictures taken will show both infrared and visible light until we can install the separate filters. You can see the effect in the pictures attached to this post! 2) The atmospheric electric field experiment led by Evan Schilling also made great strides. We made a giant capacitor using cardboard and aluminum foil to try to create an electric field, and tested this capacitor in a giant Faraday cage to eliminate most of any outside interference. Then two large styrofoam spheres were covered in aluminum foil and placed between the two plates of the capacitor to see if they picked up any signal. 3) The breakdown voltage experiment led by Maddy Lambert encountered a little problem in the beginning of the week with large voltage spikes due to the spark being produced. However, after rebuilding the circuit with more careful attention to attachments to ground and power sources, the voltage spike was eliminated, and we look ready to start soldering the circuit to a more permanent board. 4) Michael Moshe Wiznitzer finally got a chance to go outside to test the solar cells for the solar efficiency experiment with actual sunlight. He was able to figure out the best resistance to use for the optimal power output. He also made lots of progress in the code for the ardunio and data logging. The payload structure is also coming along pretty well. Danny Ochoa performed an experiment on the idea of using a hula hoop to stabilize the structure. For our team bonding activity this week, we took a walk down to the Grand Avenue Mall to buy supplies from Radio Shack. The team also learned how to solder (thanks Evan!) For the upcoming week, we hope to finalize the structure of most of our experiments. We also have to write up a report about our projects, so we definitely have our work cut out for us!
