Week 7 SUNDAY rugby seems to be popular here, at least the students play the game vigorously and early. We went to town after breakfast so Jeff could study for the national aviation test he will take on Thursday in port morsby. We got home by noon. After about and hour we noticed there were groups of people standing around a certain tree on campus near our house. I was worried that the boys had disturbed something so Jeff went to check it out. He comes back and calls us for a family meeting. Apparently a boy who had to stop playing, grabbing his stomach in the morning had died. He was a 9th grader. Alive one minute, and gone the next. his autopsy showed his spleen ruptured and he hemorrhaged. I was a bit nieve when one of the faculty moms was telling me about Max and how he died when she said he died from sorcery, because there was no obvious injury. Ummm... Okay.... I guess I did read that Papua New Guineans were really superstitious and spiritual (not in the Holy Spirit sense). I guess I wasnt expecting it from anyone on campus. So its very clear that even though 10% of the population in this country is Sda and majority Christians we can still have an positive influence through Jesus Christ! MONDAY the day began with crowds of people in groups near the spot where max died. They called school off for the week. All morning long there were cries and wailing. Haus Keri (cry) its called. It varies is length depending on when they can bury the body, but it started today. Lina is going to show us how we can cream coconut! So we are having her get a few from the market. They are 1kina each! (.35-.40cents usd) TUESDAY had a few little earth quakes. I was told that coca cola will kill anything and the residents who lived here previously swore by its medicinal uses. A lot of irony there! She would drink it for any symptoms of diareah when she felt she had a GI bug or parasite. So I tried it and surprisingly had a positive effect. Ill see if it continues to help (stop) future episodes... This is the hard part of the first four months. :/ WEDNESDAY Jeff leaves for port mosby, Capitol of Papua New Guinea, to take the aviation exam. Its on the eastern southern coast. So its warmer and has more humidity. We cant access it by road from the highlands (where we are at). We creamed coconut today. We call it shredding, but they cream it;). We watched Lina do all the steps and then drank coconut milk. She shredded it on a stool with a serrated metal edge attached to a small bench. It was cool! One of our high school friend who lives next door pulled a hair off my dress from under my arm. That was nice....but next thing I know she has it in her mouth between her teeth. I was hoping my mouth was closed and I was smiling as she continued talked to me.... Trying not to stare at my hair in her mouth. I wonder what sort of things we do that appall them;) THURSDAY a few 8 year old boys helped clear out some pesky bushes! So helpful. The kids are so skilled and coordinated. At least most of the ones Ive come in contact with. Went to the haus Keri this night at six with Noah (Its two houses down from ours). Other kidos tucked in and passed Out. The body was delivered to a teachers house he was related to. They set up benches under a tarp with lots of flowers. A table covered with a white cloth that had food under it. It lasted all night. At least we heard cries until 4am. In the morning at 630am will be the funeral. Just after the funeral his body will fly to port morsby to join his family which has another haus Keri (cry) waiting for him. We couldnt see him because he was covered with people crying over him. FRIDAY daddys home!!! What a relief.... SABBATH some heavy afternoon rain which flooded the church. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalms 139:23-24
