Week 8 - Blue Title: The Girl Who Liked Blue 182 words In her classroom, they only knew her as the girl who liked blue. The other children all had their identities ascribed too, of course, by one thing the others decided was to be their definition. Paul was the robot boy. Laura was good at dancing. Maya had hair nearly down to her waist. Tully was the girl who liked blue. Beside the pink pencil cases and glittering purple satchels of the other girls, her assortment of possessions was like the bounty of a cassowary. They were her sparkling treasures: this indigo ruler; these teal paperclips; this notebook the exact shade of a Ulysses Butterfly. She wore a blue ribbon in her blonde, featherlike hair. And, some days, she wanted to tell them that she liked country music, too, and novels about witches, and that her favourite food was rhubarb pie. She wanted to tell them her mother cried at night and her father didn’t know what to do and her brother sometimes punched walls. Other days, she was happy in the anonymity and quiet of simply being the girl who liked blue.
