Week of This week, let’s look at some of the abstract items - TopicsExpress

Week of This week, let’s look at some of the abstract items authors should look for in their works in progress. In critique, I see it often. A writer tries to eliminate every double use of a word. For the most part, this is good, especially with vibrant verbs and other words that are not typical. Writers have the tendency to grab hold of a pet word and pepper it through the chapter or chapters they write for that day. A good practice is to look for those instances. However, trying to eliminate every double usage of a common word can be detrimental to the progress of an author. Don’t get too buried down in the details. If the word jumps out at you in your review, this is a good indication that the usage should be varied or changed.
