Weekly Report from the Board Meeting at Holman Prison, 11.5.2014. Another active week for our supporters! We expanded the Daimler campaign and are now bringing it to the media. Our two stalwart advisory board members, Louis Richard and Ursula Malchau compiled a list of national and international media contacts. The plan is to assign different ones to different individuals, keeping in mind that the letters must be original and of a certain length for publication. However awareness is raised even without publication. To facilitate this there are templates for letters on our face book page and on the page Daimler: Help us to stop executions in Alabama, which can be sent to media. At this point, members of this coalition have written to media in Canada, France, Italy, (Vatican Radio), in Alabama as well as to anti-death penalty organizations in the U.S., England, Germany and France. Esther tells us that it is a joy to work with this small but very special group and that she keeps being reminded that Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, its the only thing that ever has. This morning we launched a petition on change.org to ask Daimler to take a stand on the death penalty in Alabama. We thank all who have already signed and hope that many more will. We will keep you updated! We were also able to share two excellent letters to the U.N. Commissioner of Human Rights and Amnesty International regarding the violation of Article 7 of the international Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by our country written by Ursula Malchau. She points to the fact that executions are experimentations on human beings with unauthorized and secret protocols, and to quote “using inmates as laboratory rats.” Of particular interest this week was also the following quote from the article, U.S. Executions, European Abolition, in the New York Times: “In a cat-and-mouse game, it is now the turn of the Pennsylvania-based pharmaceutical group Mylan to be the target of anti-death penalty campaigners. After Alabama named a Mylan-made drug as one of a new combination for lethal injections, a German investment fund sold off its shares in the company.” We posted this on our page together with a link where people could voice their concerns about the use of a drug manufactured by this company in the new proposed execution protocol. We plan to repost this link periodically to give more people the opportunity to protest. Esther participated in the Board call of Journey of Hope-from Violence to Healing. See you next week! Esther
