Weekly Thought: Self-Leadership “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves” – Sir Edmund Hillary How profound these words, coming from the first man to conquer Everest, are. Too often we view the many challenges in our lives as mountains we just cannot conquer. Yet, it’s only when we realise that the battle is within us, many of these challenges will flatten out and our lives could be a much easier journey than the one we initially anticipated. It is when we learn to discipline ourselves in the way we think, talk and walk – that we lead ourselves. If we cannot master this skill, we can and will not master the skill of leading others. Would you take advice on better eating habits from someone that is overweight? Would you listen to an individual giving advice on bringing up teenagers, yet doesn’t have children? Yip, the answer is an emphatic “No”… Why then, do we think people will follow us willingly if we cannot even lead ourselves? Amazing how the great minds that preceded us, knew this fact well. In the words of Seneca: “To master one’s self is the greatest mastery.” Then Confucius adds: “Good people strengthen themselves ceaselessly.”
