This is Sams story told by his new Dad On July 12. 2014 My wife Andrea and I decided we were finally ready to go looking for another large dog. We had lost our beloved “Cocopuff” about seven months prior to an inoperable cancer in the sinus. She was like our only child for 13+ years. It was as devastating as losing a family member, that’s what she was to us. Time and love heals all though, we have learned to handle the time but there was a void of love there…until now. Our last dog was rescued and we can think of no better way to gain a new family member than to adopt one that has not had a fair shot at life itself. Therefore we made our first trip to Hillsborough County Animal services on July 12. We had been looking at the website and knew a few of the dogs we wanted to go “interview”. As it turns out, the 2 dogs that we wanted to get some time with on the 12th would not be ready until later in the week, so my wife said she would come back and check them out without me and if any of them seemed like to the right one, we would come back as a family. On the 15th my wife went and did a meet and greet with the one that we thought we would like. That session did not go very well, but my wife met a volunteer there name “John” that suggested she meet with another dog that he thought would be a good fit for us. It is that day that she met “Sam” a 3yr old American Bulldog. She fell in love with him immediately. We made a plan to come back as a family with our son to all meet him the next day. I would have never considered a bulldog at all until now. We did our due diligence of research prior to our trip and decided to proceed. Our first family meeting was good but the dog was so happy to get outside that I thought he might be a little too rambunctious for our 2 year old. We thought about it a lot and had a hard time deciding, but we decided to pass on Sam. My wife and I both had difficulty sleeping for the next 2 nights. We were struggling with the indecision and the thought that we might be letting the right one go. Not to mention it might be his last chance as well. Sam is heart worm positive and with that on the resume, I know it will hard for him to find a forever home. When we were planning a family, we knew that no matter what physical or mental ailments there were, it would not deter from our love. The same applies to Sam, we know it will be tough to take on the financial responsibility of this disease, but we feel that Sam is the missing piece to our puzzle and we will do whatever we can to give him the life he truly deserves.
